Great Twitter Stories

August 2, 2009 by Doug Mcisaac

Recapping some of my favorite Twitters tories from the week starting witha great post from the always informative Chris Brogan. While some will argue with Chris’ take on Twitter etiquette, I think he nails it on alomst every point. Check it out and let me know what you think:

A Brief and Informal Twitter Etiquette Guide

I love Twitter. I think the service is a wonderful tool that permits a whole new way of communicating. The thing is, it’s also a place where newcomers might often make some mistakes in their choices that will likely be …

I found this post interesting because I’ve been speaking in front of a number of local business groups an the most common question is “Isn’t Facebook/Twitter/Social Networking just for kids?”  They are always surprised to find out the demographics of the main sites and the dramatic increase in 35+ on Facebook an Twitter.

Facebook and Twitter are for oldies — NevilleHobson.com

If you pay attention to such metrics as have been published over the past year, it probably won’t surprise you to note that the older you are, the more likely you will be to be a Facebook or Twitter user, according to the study. …

I like this idea, but feel it will have limited application for me and the others in less populated states like Montana.

It’s no secret that people often buy things based on the recommendation of a family member, friend, or celebrity that they respect. And now, with.

FaceBook Vanity URLs — Are you Getting Yours?

June 10, 2009 by Doug Mcisaac

I was going to write up about this, but Mari’s post here is great:

Here are a couple of reasons to want a vanity URL:

1. It makes it easier for people to find you and if you have a common name like “John Smith” you will want to jump on it early.

2. It’s easier to add to a business card — many of us have been adding our Twitter ids, now we can add our facebook profiles as well.

3. Fan Pages will be powerful for businesses, especially businesses that use their keywords in their name. — You have to have an existing fan page to be able to access this right now.

What are your thoughts?

How to Annoy Someone on FaceBook

March 23, 2009 by Doug Mcisaac

Quick rant here and a little insight into who I am. I hate, hate, hate being interrupted and like to schedule everything. Well almost everything.  Maybe it’s a control thing I don’t know. It’s simply a reality in my life that I need to be able to control my calender. So I’ve always hated IM unless I was planning a chat with someone. Now I just meet them on Skype and talk, but I used to have chat sessions with developers I worked with in India before Skype.  But I digress…

Here’s a rgeat way to annoy someone on Facebook. Try it I’m sure it will work every time 🙂 Sarcasm intended.

I’m on Facebook today making a post and someone uses the chat function to pop up and say “hello.” Normally I ignore them, but for what ever reason, temporary insanity? I responded and said “Hello”

Here’s how the rest oif the conversation went:

They said “how are you”

I said, “Busy” Then felt a little bad for being rude so followed up with “how are you?”

They responded with “how do you going”

I responded “?”

They responded “Where are you located?”

I responded “Billings, Mt like it says on my profile, have a good day” and closed out of Facebook.

Here’s what they or anyone interested in being successful in Social Marketing should have done:

1. Read my profile before sending me a message.

2. Commented on something that I had posted, vote on a link etc… to engage in a conversation that I had already started and so that I would recognize their name

3. Found something in my profile to comment on when they messaged me. Then they would have had a reasonable chance of getting my attention and not ultimately annoying me.

You have to remember that people are inyerested in themselves first, then they may become interested in you. So always discuss them, their profile, their interests first, then they will be open to hearing what you have to say.

Hope you enjoyed the rant — let me know your thoughts and/or what else they could have done. I need to log in and remove them from my friends list before I forget their name…
