Doug, there's an odd comfort in knowing I am not the ONLY one of the planet to make many of the mistakes you have listed. Thanks for taking the time to explain so others do not follow the breadcrumbs of your/our footsteps.

I must join the others here in saying that once I hooked up with Social Traffic I truly saw the light and it takes time to undo some of the damage already done. I wish I'd not listened to the other supposed gurus that are misguided and followed a proven leader from the start -- Simon U. Ford.

Well, live and learn, as they say.

Doug, great post. We have all made (some of) those mistakes. I am glad you are listing them here, so others can learn from our mistakes. I hope they will not only stop making the mistakes, but also follow your lead and start listening to Simon Ford. We both know from experience how much of a life altering experience that can be.

Good article Doug. A few home truths there also. Facebook, Twitter and any of the number of other social networking platforms offering so much opportunity that to begin with I guess the vast majority of people do what you and I have done.

Work the numbers and it'll pay off in the end?

Wrong! It just leaves a big empty space and a profile that resembles the twilight zone - looks familiar but quietly different somehow...

HI Doug, I liked it saw some of my mistakes there. Funny thing though those ideas seemed rational at the time. I have also joined with Simon Ford and starting to learn a lot more about what the entire process entails. The more I learn the more I realize how dumb I was about social marketing. Thanks for articulating it.

I'm just glad I found Simon and Social Traffic. There are too many people out there selling themselves as experts in social media who really don't understand what social media marketing is all about.

Thank you for your honesty.

I'm in process of making my mistakes. The abyss is deep but the rewards for persevering astounding!
